PoE Cabling Requirements

Can Cat6 Cable Power Commercial Lighting?

Cat6 and Cat6A can carry power and data to compatible PoE lighting devices when the complete channel is properly engineered.

Short Answer

Yes—Cat6 or Cat6A can power compatible commercial PoE lighting devices, but the design must account for the device power class, switch power budget, cable length, bundle heat, connectivity and manufacturer requirements.

The Entire Channel Matters

Cable category is only one part of the system. Designers must confirm the Power over Ethernet standard supported by the switch and device, the available power per port and across the switch, permanent-link length, connector ratings and the lighting manufacturer's topology.

  • Compatible PoE device and switch
  • Verified per-port and total power budget
  • Channel length within standards
  • Rated connectivity and patching
  • Bundle-size and temperature planning
  • Certification and labeling

Cat6 or Cat6A?

Both may be appropriate depending on the system. Cat6A often provides more thermal margin and long-term flexibility for higher-power PoE, but the final selection should follow the engineer's design and the active-equipment and fixture manufacturers' requirements.

Testing and Documentation

Each installed link should be labeled, mapped to its endpoint and tested to the specified category. Closeout records should connect cable IDs, switch ports, fixture or controller IDs, test results and drawings so the system can be commissioned and maintained.
