Lighting Comparison

PoE Lighting vs Traditional LED Lighting

Both approaches can use efficient LED fixtures, but the infrastructure delivering power and control is fundamentally different.

Short Answer

Traditional LED lighting normally relies on line-voltage branch circuits and separate controls; PoE lighting uses compatible network switches and Cat6/6A cabling for low-voltage power and data.

Different Power Architectures

Traditional systems place fixtures on 120V or 277V circuits fed from electrical panels. PoE systems use low-voltage DC power from compatible network equipment. Any required line-voltage work remains electrical-contractor scope.

  • Traditional: branch circuits and panels
  • PoE: Ethernet switching and power budgets
  • Both require code and manufacturer coordination
  • Hybrid designs may use both architectures

Control and Data

Traditional LED controls may be local, networked or building-automation connected. PoE systems are designed around addressable network devices, making centralized software, sensors, schedules and device information part of the architecture.

Choosing the Right Approach

Evaluate fixture availability, power demand, floor area, cable distances, controls strategy, network resiliency, project scope and lifecycle plans. Access Cabling works manufacturer-neutrally with the owner and design team to build the selected low-voltage infrastructure.
