In Depth

A closer look at digital signage

Commercial digital signage across California — lobby displays, wayfinding, menu boards, corporate communications, and video walls for offices, retail, restaurants, healthcare, and hospitality. Access Cabling installs displays, mounts, media players, cabling, and network infrastructure integrated with your CMS. Licensed C-10/C-7 (CSLB #992009).

What kind of signage you need drives everything else

Single-display lobby message board: commercial display + media player + CMS (Screenly, Yodeck, ScreenCloud). Menu board wall for a QSR: multiple synced displays with a single controller and QSR-specific CMS (Cloverleaf, Coates, Vidyoshop). Video wall for corporate lobby or command center: LED wall or LCD tiles with dedicated video processor. Wayfinding: interactive touchscreens with location-aware content. Match hardware to the use case.

Commercial displays vs. consumer TVs

Commercial displays (Samsung QM/QB, LG UH5, NEC ME/MA, Philips B-Line) are rated for 16-24 hour operation, have thinner bezels, brighter panels, and industrial mounts. Consumer TVs die fast under signage duty cycles and often have poor brightness for lit environments. Every signage install should be commercial-grade — the up-front premium pays for itself in avoided replacements.

Media players and CMS

BrightSign (industry-standard purpose-built player), Samsung SoC (system-on-chip in the display itself for simpler deployments), or a small Windows/Linux PC for more complex content. CMS choice depends on network posture, content workflow, and budget — Yodeck and ScreenCloud for small deployments, Signagelive and BrightAuthor for larger, and enterprise CMS (Poppulo, Rise Vision) for corporate communications.

Cabling, mounting, and power

Every display needs CAT6 (or coax for CATV integration), power at the mount location, and mounting per weight and load. Wall-mount, ceiling-mount, floor-standing kiosk, or recessed. Custom mounts for video walls with tile-precise alignment. Video walls need dedicated processors and often fiber HDMI extenders for long runs.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much does digital signage cost?+

Single 55-inch commercial display with mount, media player, and CMS: $2-4k installed plus $5-30/month CMS. Menu board wall (4 displays): $8-16k. Video wall (2x2 to 4x4 LCD): $25-100k+. LED walls scale higher based on pixel pitch and size.

Commercial display or a TV from Costco?+

Commercial. TVs are rated for 4-8 hours daily; signage runs 12-24. Consumer TVs also lack brightness for lit lobbies and often burn in with static content. The premium on commercial displays is small compared to replacement cost.

Can you build a video wall?+

Yes — LCD tile walls (2x2 to 6x6+), LED direct-view walls, and hybrid designs. Includes structural coordination, mounting rails, video processor, and content design/coordination.

Do you handle the CMS setup and content design?+

We deploy and configure the CMS and provide standard content templates. Ongoing content design is typically handled by your marketing team or a partner content agency; we can recommend one.

Can I run signage on my existing network?+

Yes — usually on a dedicated VLAN for isolation and QoS. Bandwidth is modest for image-based content, higher for video.

How reliable are digital signage systems?+

Commercial hardware runs for years unattended. Reliability issues almost always come from consumer-grade displays, PC-based players, or unmaintained CMS. Purpose-built players (BrightSign) and commercial displays are set-and-forget.

How much does digital signage cost?+

Digital Signage pricing depends on drop count, cable type, pathway complexity, and building conditions. Most commercial projects range from $150 to $350 per drop installed. Request a free site survey for an itemized quote.

Do you provide digital signage nationwide?+

Yes. Access Cabling is headquartered in California with a nationwide technician network for multi-site rollouts across all 50 states.

Is digital signage certified and warrantied?+

Every installation is Fluke-tested and certified. Structured cabling installs carry manufacturer warranties of up to 25 years through our Panduit, CommScope, Leviton and Belden partner relationships.
