In Depth

A closer look at ai data center infrastructure

AI and HPC data-center infrastructure cabling across California — 400G/800G-ready fiber, high-density MTP trunks, PoE++ for edge racks, and rack-scale copper for GPU/DPU interconnects. Access Cabling designs and installs cabling plants for AI training and inference workloads with attention to signal integrity, cooling airflow, and pathway density. Licensed C-10/C-7 (CSLB #992009), BICSI-trained crews.

Why AI data centers are different

GPU-heavy training clusters push per-rack power to 40-100 kW versus 5-20 kW for standard compute, densities that dictate liquid cooling and hot-aisle containment. Interconnect fabrics (InfiniBand NDR/XDR, 400G/800G Ethernet) require single-mode fiber with tight loss budgets, MTP-16 or MTP-32 assemblies, and often direct-attach copper (DAC/AOC) inside the rack. Standard 10G/25G data-center cabling won't scale to modern training workloads without a rebuild.

Fiber for 400G and 800G

Single-mode OS2 with APC polish for long reaches; parallel-optic (MTP-16 for 400G-SR8, MTP-32 for 800G-SR16) or 8-fiber MTP-12 keyed for AOC. Every trunk factory-terminated for guaranteed loss budget; field-terminated only where absolutely required. Loss margin critical — every 0.1 dB matters at 400G+.

Copper interconnect inside the rack

DAC (direct-attach copper) for short 400G/800G links inside a rack (up to 3-5m). AOC (active optical cable) for slightly longer reaches. Both are pre-terminated and cannot be shortened or field-repaired. We plan lengths carefully during rack layout.

PoE++ and management network cabling

Cat6A for the out-of-band management network (up to 60W PoE for BMC-attached equipment and rack-level appliances) and Cat6 for standard 1G/10G management. All patch panels labeled and documented alongside the fiber trunks.

Cooling and cable pathway

Overhead ladder rack and containment specifically for high-density racks. Cabling routed to avoid blocking hot-aisle exhaust or cold-aisle intake. Liquid cooling coordination with mechanical engineer on manifold routing that shares pathway with cable tray.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can you cable a GPU cluster with 400G/800G interconnect?+

Yes. We work with NVIDIA reference architectures (H100/H200/B200), Cisco Nexus and Arista fabric switches, and single-mode fiber plants with MTP-16/32 trunks. Every link certified to 400G/800G loss budget.

MTP-12, MTP-16, MTP-24, or MTP-32 — which for AI?+

MTP-16 for 400G-SR8 (8 fibers per direction). MTP-32 for 800G-SR16. MTP-12 and MTP-24 for legacy 40G/100G. Design fiber counts and connector geometry per the switch and optic spec.

Do we need liquid cooling for our AI racks?+

For any rack above ~30 kW, yes — air alone cannot dissipate. Rear-door heat exchangers (RDHx) or direct-to-chip liquid cooling are standard for H100/H200/B200 racks. We coordinate cable pathway to avoid liquid manifolds.

Can you cable an existing colo cage for AI?+

Yes — retrofit projects to bring an existing colo cage up to AI-fabric spec. Includes new overhead pathway, MTP trunks between racks, and typically upgraded PDUs and power feeds coordinated with the colo.

How much does AI data-center cabling cost?+

Highly variable — per-fabric-port pricing typically runs 2-4x standard 10/25G cabling due to single-mode, MTP, and tighter loss budget. A 64-node H100 cluster fabric cabling: $200-500k depending on rack layout and reach.

How much does AI data center infrastructure cost?+

AI Data Center Infrastructure pricing depends on drop count, cable type, pathway complexity, and building conditions. Most commercial projects range from $150 to $350 per drop installed. Request a free site survey for an itemized quote.

Do you provide AI data center infrastructure nationwide?+

Yes. Access Cabling is headquartered in California with a nationwide technician network for multi-site rollouts across all 50 states.

Is AI data center infrastructure certified and warrantied?+

Every installation is Fluke-tested and certified. Structured cabling installs carry manufacturer warranties of up to 25 years through our Panduit, CommScope, Leviton and Belden partner relationships.
