Brightness, contrast and automatic dimming
An outdoor display competing with direct sun needs 6,000-10,000 nits; shaded or east/west-facing installs work at 4,000-5,000. Peak brightness alone is not enough — high-contrast louvered or masked modules keep blacks black in daylight, and an ambient light sensor is mandatory so the display dims automatically at dusk. Running an outdoor screen at full output after dark causes complaints, violates many local sign codes, and shortens LED life. Every display we install ships with a programmed day/night dimming curve.
Weatherproofing, IP rating and thermal design
Front and rear IP65/IP66 sealing, marine-grade coated PCBs, gasketed cabinet joints, drainage paths and breathable vents are the baseline for outdoor cabinets. Heat is the real enemy: a sealed cabinet in full sun needs either engineered convection or forced air with filtered intakes, and power supplies must be derated for ambient temperature. In coastal California installs we specify additional corrosion protection for salt-air exposure, and in inland heat we oversize thermal headroom.
Structure, wind load and seismic
Outdoor displays are structures. We work from actual cabinet weight and sail area to design a steel frame, monopole or building attachment that meets the local wind-load and California seismic requirements, with stamped structural drawings when the AHJ requires them. Building-mounted displays are attached to structure, never to façade cladding, with waterproofed penetrations and a service walkway or documented lift access designed in from the start.
Permitting and code
Most jurisdictions treat an outdoor LED display as an electronic message center governed by the local sign ordinance: maximum area, height, setback, brightness in nits, minimum dwell time between messages, animation restrictions and curfew hours all vary by city. We research the applicable ordinance before design, prepare the structural, electrical and elevation drawings, and manage the submittal and inspection process so the display you buy is the display you are allowed to run.
Power, surge and lightning protection
Outdoor displays get dedicated circuits with a weatherproof local disconnect, a properly bonded ground path, and surge protection at both the power and signal entries. Fiber is used for any signal run leaving the building or exceeding copper distance, which also breaks the copper path that would otherwise carry a surge back into your network. The head-end lives indoors in a ventilated rack on a UPS.
Content, scheduling and remote management
Outdoor signage runs unattended, so remote management matters more than it does indoors. We deploy a media player or CMS — BrightSign, Xogo, ScreenCloud, MagicINFO or the processor's own scheduler — with remote health monitoring, automated day-part scheduling, emergency message override and a fallback playlist if the network drops. Your marketing team gets training and a template set for the display's native canvas.
