What's the typical loss for a fusion splice?+
Under 0.05 dB for a well-executed single-mode splice with a core-alignment splicer, and typically 0.02-0.03 dB is achievable. Multimode splices run slightly higher (0.05-0.10 dB). Anything over 0.10 dB we cleave and redo.
Do I need fusion splicing or is mechanical enough?+
For any single-mode span, any OTDR-certified link, any span longer than a few hundred meters, or anything a manufacturer 25-year system warranty depends on — fusion. Mechanical splices are for emergency field repairs only, and even then we redo them fusion-style at the next scheduled window.
How much does fiber splicing cost per splice?+
Inside-plant pigtail splices in an accessible panel run $50-$100 each on a batch job. OSP splice cases (opening the case, splicing 12-48 strands, re-sealing, OTDR-testing) run $100-$200 per strand plus a mobilization for the truck. Emergency after-hours splicing is billed at premium T&M rates.
Can you splice ribbon fiber?+
Yes — we have mass-fusion ribbon splicers (Sumitomo T-72C, Fujikura 90R) for 4/8/12-fiber ribbon common in high-count OSP and hyperscale data-center trunks. Mass fusion is 5-10x faster than single-fiber splicing on high-count cables.
Can you splice into an existing OSP splice case?+
Yes. We open the existing case, add or repair splices in a new tray, verify all fibers OTDR both ways, re-seal per manufacturer instructions, and pressure-test where applicable. We stock replacement gaskets and buffer tubes for common Corning, 3M, and CommScope enclosures.
How long does it take to splice a 48-strand cable?+
Roughly 3-5 hours for a full 48-strand fusion splice job in an OSP enclosure with bidirectional OTDR verification, cleaning, and case reseal — assuming reasonable access. Ribbon cable is significantly faster.
Do you provide OTDR traces after splicing?+
Yes — bidirectional Tier 2 OTDR trace on every strand, plus Tier 1 end-to-end insertion loss when the full link is accessible. Delivered as .sor files and a PDF report.
Can you splice on aerial spans?+
Yes. We work aerial with certified boom-truck operators (or coordinate with your utility contractor), install midspan splice cases with proper slack storage on the messenger, and follow local pole-attachment and CPUC safety standards.
