In Depth

A closer look at fiber optic repair

Emergency and scheduled fiber optic repair across California — fusion splice repairs, connector re-termination, damaged cable replacement, OTDR fault location, and full recertification. Access Cabling dispatches BICSI-trained fusion-splicing crews from five California offices with Fujikura and Sumitomo splicers on the truck, typically on-site same-day for outages. Licensed C-10/C-7 (CSLB #992009).

Common failure modes we repair

Backhoe cuts and construction damage to outside-plant runs. Rodent damage on unarmored inside/outside cable. Water intrusion at splice cases or building entries. Bend-radius damage from cables pinched by ceiling tiles, rack doors, or over-tightened cable ties. Contaminated or scratched end-faces (the single most common cause of link degradation). Failed field-terminated connectors from age or thermal cycling. Broken pigtails at patch panels.

How we locate the fault

Every repair starts with an OTDR trace from both ends of the affected strand. Fluke OptiFiber Pro or EXFO MaxTester locates the event to within a few meters, distinguishes between a break, a high-loss splice, a macrobend, and a bad connector, and confirms the fault type before we open a splice case or repull cable. For end-face contamination we use a Fluke FI-3000 or JDSU FiberChek inspection scope at 400x.

Repair options

Contaminated connector — clean with dry cleaner (Cletop or one-click), re-inspect, done in minutes. Failed connector — cut back and fusion-splice a new pigtail; re-test. Damaged span of cable — splice new cable in with a splice case at each end, or repull the entire span if the damage location is inaccessible or cable count is high. In-building bend or crush damage — cut and splice a new segment in place.

Emergency response and after-hours

For active-outage calls we dispatch 24/7 across our California service area with a splicing truck, cable stock, and enclosures. Typical on-site arrival is 2-4 hours in the greater Bay Area, LA basin, Sacramento, and San Diego; longer for remote campus sites. We coordinate with your NOC through the repair, keep you on a live call, and provide the OTDR before/after traces as soon as the link is restored.

Recertification after repair

Every repaired strand receives a fresh Tier 1 loss test and Tier 2 OTDR trace, plus connector end-face inspection photos. You get the updated .flw/.sor files and a written repair report — same documentation standard as a new install.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How fast can you respond to a fiber outage?+

For emergency calls in our core California service areas (Bay Area, LA, Orange County, San Diego, Sacramento) we typically arrive on-site within 2-4 hours, 24/7. Nationwide emergency support is available through partner splicing crews. Call our dispatch line and stay on the line — we start the ticket while the truck rolls.

How much does an emergency fiber repair cost?+

A typical single-strand splice repair with OTDR recertification runs $600-$1,500 depending on drive time, hour of day, and enclosure work required. Multi-strand repairs (backhoe cuts on a 12-strand cable) are billed T&M plus materials. We quote after diagnosis and confirm scope before opening a splice case.

Can you locate a fault without digging up the run?+

Yes. OTDR from either end pinpoints the event to within a few meters. For OSP runs we combine OTDR distance with as-built drawings and, if needed, a locator wand on the tracer wire in the conduit or on the cable armor. We only excavate at the confirmed fault location.

Can you repair fiber terminated by another contractor?+

Yes. We repair and recertify any fiber plant regardless of who installed it. We may recommend re-terminating one or both ends if the existing connectors don't meet current loss/inspection standards.

Do you provide splice cases and enclosures?+

Yes — we stock Corning FOSC-450, 3M 2178, and CommScope enclosures for inside-plant, aerial, and buried applications, plus splice trays and pigtails in common counts. For unusual cable counts or armored/OSP designs we source overnight.

What documentation do I receive after a repair?+

Pre-repair OTDR trace showing the fault, post-repair OTDR trace showing the fix, Tier 1 loss test, connector inspection photos, splice log with fiber IDs, and a one-page repair report — delivered same day as the repair closes.

Can you replace an entire damaged span?+

Yes. When splice repair isn't practical (severe damage, multiple faults, or cable at end of life) we repull the affected span with new cable and matched pigtails, then recertify the entire strand end-to-end.

Do you carry after-hours and weekend availability?+

Yes — 24/7/365 dispatch for outage calls. Scheduled (non-emergency) repairs are usually booked within 3-5 business days across California.

How much does fiber optic repair cost?+

Fiber Optic Repair pricing depends on drop count, cable type, pathway complexity, and building conditions. Most commercial projects range from $150 to $350 per drop installed. Request a free site survey for an itemized quote.

Do you provide fiber optic repair nationwide?+

Yes. Access Cabling is headquartered in California with a nationwide technician network for multi-site rollouts across all 50 states.

Is fiber optic repair certified and warrantied?+

Every installation is Fluke-tested and certified. Structured cabling installs carry manufacturer warranties of up to 25 years through our Panduit, CommScope, Leviton and Belden partner relationships.
