While these installations may appear straightforward, cable routing, support methods, fire stopping, and the amount of cable installed in concealed spaces can all affect code compliance.

Planning these items before construction begins is usually much easier than making corrections after an inspection.

Does San Jose require permits for commercial low-voltage cabling?+

Most commercial low-voltage installations in San Jose require permitting through the City of San José Building Division, and larger projects may also trigger review by the San José Fire Department. Requirements vary based on scope, occupancy type, and whether the building is sprinklered. Always confirm with the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) before starting work.

What is the SJFD Unsprinklered Concealed Spaces policy?+

It is a local policy published by the San José Fire Department Office of the Fire Marshal that addresses how grouped combustible cabling installed in unsprinklered limited or non-combustible concealed spaces (such as above ceilings) is treated. Depending on cable quantity and installation method, additional measures like metal raceway, MC cable, cable management, or localized sprinkler protection may be required.

Is plenum-rated cable enough to satisfy San Jose fire code?+

Not automatically. Plenum-rated (CMP) cable is one part of the picture, but it does not by itself eliminate the requirement for additional consideration of concealed space fire loading, especially in larger bundle installations. Coordinate with the AHJ during design — do not assume plenum cable satisfies every local requirement.

Which projects most often need extra fire marshal review in San Jose?+

Data centers, network room build-outs, hospital and school renovations, large tenant improvements, warehouses and manufacturing spaces, fiber backbone runs, and any project with significant grouped cable bundles above ceilings are the most common triggers.

What documentation should we deliver on a San Jose commercial cabling project?+

At minimum: TIA-606 cable labeling schedule, Fluke DSX (or equivalent) certification test reports for copper, OTDR and insertion loss reports for fiber, firestopping product data and locations, cable pathway drawings, and as-built documentation.
